1955 COMMER LONG WHEELBASE EXPRESS DELIVERY VAN, rare indeed and in fact, I have never seen another. This roomy 9cwt commercial was marketed to be slightly above the Austin-Morris offerings of the period. Based on the Hillman Minx/ Husky it inherited the 1390cc engine and four speed gearbox giving ample power and good economy. The roomy cabin boasts a cigarette lighter, heater and correct period steering wheel. The upholstery has benefitted as part of a total refurbishment and is smartly presented in red. The load area has been lined and has double doors for ease of access.
For some years the Commer has formed part of a Cornish Museum Collection of mainly commercial vehicles. The coachwork is first class with both the paintwork and chrome being in excellent order. The low mileage is thought to be genuine.
The current owner had a less than happy experience with the previous incumbent (not the Museum) and although paying top money for what was purported to be a first class purchase, on getting it home it was clearly not worthy of the fresh MOT certificate with which it was supplied.
Fortunately our man worked part time for probably the finest Restoration Firm in the South and the Commer had a detailed examination, followed by a careful programme of rectification amidst Ferraris, Maseratis, Alfas and much exotica. The result is a very fine and still highly useable Classic Commercial, which should be a prize winner once Shows are permitted. A file of invoices amounting to some £12, 000, will attest to the standard of professional expertise involved. V5c registration document and history file included.
Viewing the vehicle is by appointment at its Portsmouth Home.
