Lagonda took home first place in the 1935 Le Mans race, with drivers John Hindmarsh and Luis Fontes behind the wheel of a Lagonda M45R. This was a significant achievement for the brand, as it solidified their reputation as a high-performance racing car manufacturer.

The 1929 Lagonda Speedster was also a popular choice for hillclimb races. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, a Lagonda Speedster driven by Jim Elwes set multiple records at the Shelsley Walsh hillclimb in England. Elwes’ Speedster was equipped with a supercharged 4.5-liter engine and was able to complete the 1,000-yard hillclimb in under 40 seconds, making it one of the fastest cars at the time.

In the United States, the Lagonda Speedster was popular in road races and rally events. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the car was regularly seen at events such as the Pebble Beach Road Races and the Carrera Panamericana, where it competed against other high-performance cars of the era.

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL roadster W198

Online Car Auction

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL roadster W198, a 1957 masterpiece designed by Friedrich Geiger, is widely recognized as the world’s first “supercar”.

This convertible 300SL was introduced to replace the Gullwing Mercedes 300 SL and remained in production until 1963.

The 300 SL Roadster quickly became a status symbol and was owned by several famous individuals including Natalie Wood, Steve McQueen, Sophia Loren, and Clark Gable, among others. It boasted impressive speed capabilities of up to 260 km/h and its prototype was first spotted by the German magazine Auto, Motor und Sport in the summer of 1956.

After its production model debut at the 1957 Geneva Motor Show, the final 70 of the 1,400 Coupes and the first 618 of the 300 SL Roadsters were assembled by the end of that year. Mercedes-Benz decided to convert the 300 SL (W 198) to an open-top two-seater due to their increasing popularity. This led to the creation of the 300 SL Roadster in spring 1957, which introduced open-top driving to high-performance sports cars. Equipped with a new rear axle design, this model boasted state-of-the-art handling characteristics and in 1961 became the first Mercedes-Benz production car to be given disc brakes on all four wheels.

The Porsche 914

The Porsche 914

The Porsche 914

Online Car Auction

The Porsche 914, a mid-engined sports car, was a joint venture between Porsche and Volkswagen from 1969 until 1976.

The original concept was to replace Porsche’s 912 with a cheaper and less 911-like model, while Volkswagen wanted a car vastly different from the Beetle, Bus, and Fastback. However, after the death of VW Chairman Heinrich Nordhoff in 1968, his successor Kurt Lotz made significant changes to the deal.

Originally, Porsche was to sell the six-cylinder version of the 914 while Volkswagen would market the four-cylinder cars. However, the new agreement dictated that the 914 would be marketed as a Porsche in the United States and as a VW-Porsche in Europe. Coachbuilder Karmann would assemble the 914, with bodies for the six-cylinder cars sent to Porsche for engine installation.

The car debuted at the 1969 Frankfurt Auto Show and was a blend of both companies’ parts bins. The front suspension was mostly derived from the 911 with some VW components, while the interior was a combination of both companies’ parts. The initial engine offering was Volkswagen’s 80-hp fuel-injected 1.7 liter flat four, while the 914/6 had a twin-carburetor 2.0-liter Porsche flat six tuned for 110 hp.

Though some publications panned the car’s oddball styling, balky shift linkage, and slow acceleration of the four-cylinder car, the six-cylinder car struggled due to its high price. Volkswagen’s deal with Porsche meant that the 914/6 was nearly as expensive as the entry-level 911, and after selling a mere 3,349 copies, Porsche killed it in 1972.

In its place, the ’73 914 got an optional 100-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder along with a smoother-shifting transmission, and in 1974 the 1.7-liter engine was replaced by an 85-hp 1.8-liter, with all four-cylinder engines featuring fuel injection. However, stricter emissions standards in 1976 led to the end of production.

Despite being dismissed by some as a glorified Volkswagen, the 914 has gained more appreciation in recent years for its unique styling, enjoyable driving experience, and easy maintenance. Nearly 119,000 copies of the 914 were sold by Porsche and Volkswagen.

The 1970 Lancia Stratos Zero Prototype by Marcello Gandini: An Iconic Design of the 70s

The 1970 Lancia Stratos Zero Prototype by Marcello Gandini: An Iconic Design of the 70s

The 1970 Lancia Stratos Zero Prototype by Marcello Gandini: An Iconic Design of the 70s

Online Car Auction

The Lancia Stratos Zero is a prototype car that was designed by Marcello Gandini of the Bertone design house in 1970.

The car was a futuristic design that would set the tone for many of the sports cars of the 1970s. Its wedge-shaped design, complete with gull-wing doors, made it an iconic car that is still remembered today.

The Lancia Stratos Zero was first introduced at the Turin Motor Show in 1970. It was not a functional car, but rather a design study that showcased the abilities of the Bertone design house. The car was based on a shortened Lancia Fulvia chassis and was powered by a Fulvia V4 engine. The car was designed to be low and sleek, with a sloping front and a flat roof that tapered towards the back. The front of the car was dominated by a narrow grille and small headlights, while the rear featured a pair of round taillights.

One of the most striking features of the Lancia Stratos Zero was its gull-wing doors. The doors opened upwards and forwards, making it easier to get in and out of the car. The doors were hinged at the front and rear of the car, and were operated by electric motors. The roof of the car was also made of glass, giving the driver and passengers a clear view of the sky above.

The interior of the Lancia Stratos Zero was equally futuristic. The seats were integrated into the car’s structure, and were made of a lightweight material. The dashboard was also integrated into the car’s structure, and featured a central instrument cluster that was angled towards the driver. The steering wheel was also futuristic, with a squared-off design that gave the driver a better grip.

The Lancia Stratos Zero was an instant hit at the Turin Motor Show. The car’s futuristic design captured the imagination of the public, and it was praised for its boldness and innovation. However, the car was not without its critics. Some felt that the car was too radical, and that its design was not practical for everyday use.

Despite this, the Lancia Stratos Zero had a lasting impact on the automotive industry. Its wedge-shaped design became a hallmark of the sports cars of the 1970s, and it inspired a number of other cars, including the Lamborghini Countach and the Lotus Esprit. The car’s gull-wing doors also became a popular feature, and were later used on a number of other cars, including the DeLorean DMC-12.

After its debut at the Turin Motor Show, the Lancia Stratos Zero was shown at a number of other auto shows around the world. The car was also featured in a number of films, including “The Car” and “The Man with the Golden Gun”. However, the car was never put into production, and only one prototype was ever built.

Today, the Lancia Stratos Zero is considered a classic of automotive design. The car’s wedge-shaped design and gull-wing doors have made it an icon of the 1970s, and it is still admired by car enthusiasts around the world. The car is now housed in the Bertone design house museum in Turin, Italy, where it can be seen by visitors from around the world.

In conclusion, the Lancia Stratos Zero is a prototype car that has become an icon of automotive design. Its wedge-shaped design and gull-wing doors were ahead of their time
