Description

  • In the early 1920s, the famous coachbuilder Henri Labourdette made trailers under the Trencar brand name. These were used to transport luggage during lengthy trips, often to spa towns offering curative treatments where it was considered beneficial to 'take the waters'. One of the oldest of French coachbuilders with a reputation for quality second to none, Labourdette could trace its origins as far back as 1858 when blacksmith Jean-Baptiste Labourdette founded a carriage making-business in Paris. The company built its first motor body, for a Panhard-Levassor chassis, circa 1899.

Jean-Baptiste's son Jean-Henri became head of the family in 1910, and it was largely through his efforts that Labourdette became known worldwide for the quality of its products. Recognising the importance of aerodynamics, he designed blunt-nosed bodies with tapering rear ends, and pioneered the 'skiff' style of open bodywork, and all this before WWI. Labourdette's appetite for innovation continued unabated between the wars, but the firm's activities were much reduced after WW2 and it closed in 1949. Described by the vendor as in excellent condition, this rare Trencar box-trailer (only three are known) would be the perfect travelling companion for any Vintage-era thoroughbred.
