Many UK manufacturers offered large V twins between WWI and WWII, some being fitted with box sidecars which were used commercially to haul goods before vans became common place.

The V twin ‘AJ’ was one of the most effective and popular sidecar combinations of its day. The model remained a fixture in the AJS range into the 1930s in later years with a 996cc engine.

This bike and sidecar is from the top of the AJS range for 1929 and is a standard V twin which would have cost £66 in 1929.  The top of the range V twin in 1929 was the M1 which would have cost £76.10s and included Lucas Magdyno electric lights; this M2’s headlamp has been fitted more recently. Additionally, the shown exhaust needs replacing with a correct fishtail.  The engine is AJS’s own and was only offered in side valve form.
