The B5 is the successor to the Alpina B10 Biturbo which was the fastest production sedan in the world from 1989 to 1996. The main competitors were the Mercedes-Benz E 55 AMG, today the E 63 AMG.
As a basis of comarison, BMW E60 and the 4.4-liter engine from the former 545i / 745i. Compared to the BMW model of Alpina B5 has larger brakes, a new chassis with Electronic Damper Control (EDC chassis), a stainless steel exhaust system with polished twin tailpipe and the typical Alpina changes in the exterior and interior.
2010, there were in Germany a total of 24 new registrations.
Motor
The 4.4-liter V8 will be by means of a rotary compressor charged (radial compressor). The loader from the company ASA is also called "Turbessor" because it combines the advantages of a turbocharger and compressor. At low speeds, it spontaneously responds as a conventional displacement compressor, but it can also immediately provide the thrust of a turbo. Like this, it also reaches speeds of more than 100,000 revolutions per minute. As a result of this measure, the power increased from 245 kW (333 hp) to 368 kW (500 hp). The torque could be increased from standard 450 Nm to 700 Nm. The power is transmitted to the rear wheels by means of an automatic six-speed automatic transmission (6HP 26). As with Alpina usual, this has been refined and has the "Switch-Tronic".

Note
In 2005 launched a Alpina B5 Touring as part of the high-speed test of Auto, Motor und Sport in Nardo. The B5 reached here a top speed of 319 km / h.
Alpina B5 S
At the IAA 2007 in Frankfurt presented the revised Alpina B5 S before.
Motor
The combustion process was optimized by changing the camshaft spreading. This results in a significantly lower exhaust gas temperature, which is the basis for the performance increase. The output of the 4.4-liter V8 was thus increased by 22 kW to 390 kW (530 hp). The torque increased by 25 Nm to 725 Nm. The sprint to 100 km / h the B5 S takes place in 4.6s; the V max increases to 317 km / h.
Gear
One innovation is the ZF six-speed Sport-Switch-Tronic transmission. The switching time could be reduced by 50% compared to the predecessor. The response time is 1/10 s. In manual mode, the driving feeling is comparable to the shift dynamics of a dual clutch transmission.
Suspension
A further novelty is the EDC suspension, which has been reworked with Sachs Race Engineering.
