Harley Davidson Motorcycles El Knucklehead 1935-1947

The EL was introduced to Harley-Davidson dealers in December 1935 and although not as wild as the rumours had predicted, the 61 cu in this model never-the-less set new standards for Harley-Davidson, not to mention the motorcycle industry.
Most important was the V-Twin’s switch from flathead design to overhead valves. Due to the reshaping of the rocker covers, the engine was dubbed ‘knucklehead’ by owners, a nickname by which it is still fondly known today. The other major advance was in the lubrication system where the new recirculating oiling system eliminated the old dirty ‘total loss’ system.
It’s a 45 degree V Twin, pushrod actuated overhead valve motor with 2 valves per cylinder and was manufactured from 1935 until 1947 when the Panhead replaced it. In its first year of production over 1,500 units were sold, thus cementing its place in Harley’s history.
This restored EL was purchased from the US in 2008.
