Harley Davidson Motorcycles J And Royal Sidecar 1926

This model J Harley was very successful for Harley Davidson in keeping the company’s side car sales rocketing.

Today we have little appreciation of the role sidecars used to have in society. We consider them to be slow, cumbersome and challenging to master and make comments like “they take the same space in my garage as a small car”. In fact, at its peak (1919) Harley Davidson was selling seven side cars for every ten bikes sold before Ford’s Model T became cheap enough to offer a more comfortable alternative. It is easy to imagine the number of side car bikes on the road back in the 1920s. In those days NZ families would go on holiday with dad, mum and two children all in a side car and often with a small trailer along behind.

This lovely V twin was purchased at auction in Auckland in 2008 from a New Zealand collection. It has been well maintained throughout the previous ownership period.
