Jowett 8hp 1937–1940

Resistance was being felt to the meagre RAC rating of 6.4hp for sales so the Jowett was advertised at 8hp(RAC) and sold well with no changes! A waiting list of one year developed and business went well.

Rare and innovative, Jowetts use of a horizontally opposed pair of cylinders set them apart from the competition. In order to prove this, Jowett sent two cars named "wait" & "see" to west Africa in the 1920's and proceeded to drive them ever eastwards until they met the red sea, a journey taking some 60 days.

Styling is now on Hillman Minx lines with easy-clean wheels, no running boards and flush boot. Wider track by 3ins makes for an even roomier car, but 50mph is very hard work. Fencer's mask grilles '38, when standard models have exposed spare wheels. Projecting boots, piston type dampers, Burman-Douglas steering and (at last) synchro on rare '40 models.
