Matchless Motorcycles V12 1929

The new model Matchless V2 495cc OHV super sports replaced the 1927 Model V.

The engine was improved by the new two-port head and exhaust system and the frame was the new trussed design, with a small variation of the under tank tubes to accommodate the enclosed oh v gear etc.

The valves were operated by long Duralumin push rods and roller bearing mounted rockers with the pushrods enclosed in telescopic tubes, an innovation at that time.

In May 1929, this model featured In the UK Cycle Magazine with a comprehensive write up on the bike and its’ carefully thought out design capabilities. It is often referred to as a ‘Super Sports Machine’ suitable for ‘High speed trials’ and comfortable distance commuting. In that extensive article perhaps the final few paragraphs in the article sum up this machine.

‘It is rather difficult to define exactly the charm exercised by the “V2” on first acquaintance. Perhaps it was due to its tireless, ever willing engine, or its remarkable steering qualities, or perhaps only because of that indefinable feeling of ‘one-ness’ with the rider that it inspired. Or perhaps it was a mixture of the three; anyway, it was with real regret that the handsome, sturdy mount was returned to its owners.’

‘The first time in Australian motor cycling history the speed of 100 mph on track, road or beach has been attained.

This remarkable performance was achieved by Cec Weatherby on Sunday Nov 25 1928 at the Canterbury CC’s flying quarter mile event. Riding a Matchless model V2 Weatherby was a sensation of the meeting, recording the then unprecedented time of 9 seconds. Not only creating news for solo speeds Wetherby also attained with a side car attached, the speed of 80 mph, this being obtained in the All Powers Sidecar Class.’

This bike was rebuilt by Auto Restorations Ltd in Christchurch and was purchased in 2008 from a well-known Christchurch collection.
