Joseph Merkel first introduced his motorcycle brand to the US in 1902.

980cc V Twin. The many successful developments of his original concept lead to a number of early patents and by 1912 his Flying Merkel was favoured in the growing American racing fraternity. Examples of his new technology include the development of a spring front fork and monoshock rear suspension.

The Merkel brand had a serious commitment to racing and record setting during this period, and as a result it dominated many events.

By 1914 there were over 30 American motorcycle manufacturers; the high production cost of the advanced Flying Merkel eventually drove it out of business by 1919.

This particular bike was owned by the legendary casino tycoon Bill Harrah and was a part of his famous collection. The bike passed into private ownership after his death. It has recently been given a short run to help keep it healthy and happy.
