The car was produced from 1956 to 1959. A total of 252 copies were produced.

The idea for the car originally came from the U.S. car importer Max Hoffman who in 1954 persuaded BMW to produce a roadster model of the BMW 501 and 502 and fill the gap between the expensive 300SL and cheap and underpowered Triumphs and MG’s.

The new model was fitted with brand’s own aluminium 3.2 litre V8 which produced 150hp and pushed the car to top speed of 122mph.

Originally, the roadster BMW was meant to be exported to the US market at a rate of 1000 per year. Unfortunately, the whole production of the car proved to be too expensive – BMW faced big losses and had to end the project with only 252 507’s units built.
