Motoring’s most famous partnership, Rolls-Royce, was established in 1904 by the Honourable Charles Stewart Rolls and the engineer Frederick Henry Royce.
They showed their first car publicly in December 1904 at the Paris Salon. The 40/50 was the fourth model of the company’s original range. The 13th 40/50 chassis was completed in April 1907. It was fitted with a Barker tourer body painted silver and had silver fittings.
Christened the Silver Ghost, it was henceforward the name by which all Rolls-Royce 40/50 cars would be known. In May 1925, the Silver Ghost was replaced by the New Phantom. Subsequently with the launch of later models this would become known as the Phantom I.
The engine of the Phantom 1 had ohvs and an increased capacity of 7668cc producing around 90 bhp. The epitome of luxury for which Rolls-Royce is renowned, the Phantom I was replaced by the Phantom II in September 1929 after 2212 units had been made.
