This exotic and rarefied offering is a direct descendant of the 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 Le Mans Berlinetta.

It represents the culmination of prewar Italian concept and design. Essentially a production car from 1925-1954, it was based on the original creation of the 6C 1500 by Vittorio Jano. The popular 6C 2500 was available as both a competion and road going car.

Per Alfa Romeo, it’s estimated that of the many cars produced…only 33-40 units of the original 6C 2500 “Super Sport” shorter chassis’ were built. Alfa then sent out all of the SS chassis to be bodied and trimmed by various commissioned coachbuilders, and each car was customized in its own unique bodywork, creating a number of stunning “one-off” automobiles. Combining the finest of aerodynamics, elegance, technology and speed, the race cars were cloaked in lightweight aluminum curvaceous bodies, modified independent suspension, robust braking, larger fuel tanks, fast gear steering, and an avant-garde column mounted gear change. The cars were generally fitted with six-cylinder twin overhead camshaft unsupercharged engines, primed to produce 120 hp. Bruno Trevisan provided assistance and tweaked performance/reliability issues to help maintain peak output.

Interestingly, three of the competion cars were completed at Carrozzeria Touring in 1939 in preparation for the grueling Mille Miglia Race…however, due to a tragic accident at the track…the cars made their debut at the Tobruk-Tripoli Race, where they finished first, second and fourth place.

The 6C 2500, along with it’s predecessors and siblings have many successful wins for Alfa Romeo globally.

The fully independent suspension also made the prewar Alfa 2500 model one of Europes most exquisite road machines…and along with the ultra rare Super Sport version, the 6C 2500 model provides for many admiring glances at concours shows around the world.
Over the years at least two of the original SS short chassis’ have surfaced with replica bodies…and its reported that they still demanded prices north of $750,000.00 plus. The other Super Sport 6C 2500 remaining cars…if located for sale, are in the multi million dollar range. Aesthetically beautiful… these stunning race cars were clearly form, function and exquisite rolling art.
