Another month, another ‘tour de force’ with much to see and do:

We have just returned back from a European trip hanging out at the Zoute Grand Prix, and despite being there for the Concours, Supercar Run and the well-lubricated Bonhams auction, we still managed to miss out on other special events running at the same time.

Even as someone who attends numerous car gatherings each year, both as an enthusiast and for business purposes, I still find myself pleasantly surprised by the unveiling of fresh, unfamiliar vehicles. Some of them possess a discreet charm and subtle significance that becomes apparent upon closer inspection.

The classic car world, undoubtedly, is still vibrant and thriving. However, the age-old question of its longevity lingers: Will the economy dampen the market? What does the future hold? Having been deeply involved in the classic car scene for most of my life, I’ve witnessed economic highs and lows, and our world has always managed to weather the storms.

Certainly, there will be downturns, and some cars may suffer. Yet, we should not let the armchair critics who claim to know better intimidate us. Fuel prices may rise, and people may face challenges, but the passion for rallies and the excitement of auction houses unveiling new treasures will persist (even if it is a bit unnerving).

The fundamental essence of owning and driving a classic car lies in the enjoyment of the entire process. If you acquire your classic in a wise manner and it appreciates in value, that’s an added bonus. However, if you acquire a car that tugs at your heartstrings and it happens to depreciate, but you still derive joy from it, that’s still a victory. I can share countless stories along those lines. Ultimately, if you have fun, it makes all the difference!

Now, turning our attention to the auction world, the Zoute event may have bent the rules a bit, but the provision of alcohol to ease the pain proved effective and contributed to a smoother auction flow. We even witnessed some record-breaking moments!

However, the expanding realm of online auctions raises concerns. While online buying is popular, it can also come back to haunt you if you’re even the slightest bit uncertain. The golden rule is simple: If you have any doubts, refrain from making the purchase.

Furthermore, overconfidence can arise from the proliferation of TV programs that depict classic car buying as an easy endeavor. They often portray a few hours of welding, some cans of paint, and voila! Your investment has doubled. I must apologize for bursting that bubble, as it’s not as effortless as it seems on screen. The reality behind the scenes is far from a walk in the park.

If you ever wish to discuss buying or selling a classic car, need assistance with restoration, or simply seek friendly advice on the right path to take, we are here to lend a helping hand. Our expertise lies in valuations, commission sales, and vehicle inspections.

Wishing you happy motoring and safety on the roads.
