Chronology
Predecessor E92/E93 3 Series

The BMW F32/F33/F36 series is the first generation of the BMW 4 Series range of entry-level luxury cars.

It was launched in 2014 as the successor to the E92/E93 coupe/convertible models of the fifth-generation 3 Series range The F32/F33/F36 is produced alongside - and shares many features with - the F30 3 Series The body styles of the first generation 4 Series range are:
  • 2-door coupe (F32 model code)
  • 2-door convertible (F33 model code)
  • 4-door sedan (F36 model code, marketed as "4 Series Gran Coupe")

As per the F30 3 Series range, the F32/F33/F36 is powered by turbocharged petrol and diesel engines with 3 cylinders (petrol only), 4 cylinders and 6 cylinders.

The F82/F83 M4 models were introduced in 2014. They are powered by the S55 turbocharged straight-six engine.

Development and production

In 2013, the concept vehicle for the 4 Series coupe was unveiled in North American International Auto Show.

Compared with its E92 predecessor, the F32's wheelbase is 50 mm (2.0 in) longer, the overall length is increased by 31 mm (1.2 in) and the width is increased by 44 mm (1.7 in). The front track width is 1,545 mm (60.8 in) and the rear track width is 1,593 mm (62.7 in), increases of 45 mm (1.8 in) and 80 mm (3.1 in) respectively.

Production of the 4 Series Coupé (excluding M4) began in Munich in July 2013. Production of the convertible began in Regensburg in November 2013.

The 4 Series Gran Coupé was unveiled in 84th Geneva International Motor Show 2014, followed by 2014 New York International Auto Show and the 13th Beijing International Automotive Exhibition in 2014.

As per the larger 6 Series Gran Coupé (F06), the F36 has coupe styling with a liftback rear. However, the F36 includes a C-pillar located behind the rear doors, as per the F32 coupe (but unlike the 6 Series Gran Coupé). Compared with the F30 sedan, the F36 has 13 mm (0.5 in) less rear headroom and the same cargo volume. With the rear seats folded down, the F36 has a cargo volume of 1300 Litres.

The launch models were the petrol-engined 420i, 428i and 435i, and the diesel 418d and 420d. The 435i Gran Coupe is approximately 91 kg (200 lb) heavier than the equivalent F30 335i sedan.

M4 version

F82 M4 coupe (2015)

Up until 2014, BMW M models used the same model codes as the rest of the model range. However, the F32/F33/F36 generation was one of the first where the M models use separate model codes: F82 for the coupe and F83 for the convertible.

The F82/F83 M4 is powered by the S55 turbocharged straight-6 engine producing 431 PS (317 kW; 425 hp) and 550 N·m (406 lb·ft). The gearbox is either a 6-speed manual (with throttle blip on downshifts) or a 7-speed dual clutch transmission (M-DCT).

The M4 also includes an electronically controlled limited-slip differential, electric steering, aluminium stiffening plate, additional bolted joints between the axle subframe and the body sills, five-link rear suspension constructed from aluminium and a carbon-fibre roof. Unusually, the suspension subframes are directly connected to the chassis without rubber bushings. An optional head-up display comes with additional M-specific functions such as a gear display, rev counter and Optimum Shift Indicator.

M4 Coupé (F82)

The Concept M4 Coupé was unveiled in 2013 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, followed by Tokyo Motor Show 2013. The production version was then unveiled in 2014 North American International Auto Show, followed by 13th Beijing International Automotive Exhibition 2014.

Marketing

As part of the BMW 4 Series Coupé launch, a TV spot was produced by Hollywood director Samuel Bayer. A print campaign featuring Uwe Düttmann’s photographs resembling high-speed-driving shots, but a closer look reveals that the motion blur of the surroundings is simulated by ropes, was produced. The campaign was presented online and through social media channels in Germany, where online banner ads and animations will develop the idea of the print campaign and TV spot, and also work with the effect of a dynamic moving car. A central landing page on www.bmw.de features information on the vehicles shown, as well as background on the TV commercial and a prize game. Visitors to BMW Germany’s Facebook page can also win a new BMW Z4 for a three-month period. In parallel, the campaign will also be presented in more detail through the brand’s YouTube channel and BMW’s own www.bmw-tv.de channel with a special on the subject of design.
