The BMW G30 is the seventh and current generation of the BMW 5 Series, BMW's lineup of mid-size executive cars.

It is offered in saloon and Touring estate body styles

The G30 5 Series was officially unveiled in October 2016, and officially launched in February 2017.

Specifications

The OKL platform uses multiple materials to increase structural rigidity and decrease overall mass. Following the BMW i models, as well as the 7 Series, its technical base is made of carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP), magnesium, aluminium and high-strength steel. As a result of these measures, the G30 weighs up to 100 kg (220 lb) less than its predecessor. Improvements to the ride involve the addition of air springs on both the front and rear axle. The front grille is capable of closing and opening its shutters to allow for optimal engine cooling and better aerodynamic flow whenever possible.

The 5 Series is equipped with BMW's sixth-generation iDrive vehicle control system, which has been expanded to offer four manual input options, most notably gesture-recognizing controls. The electronic architecture has been upgraded to a 48V system in order to allow for the use of a number of autonomous driver assistance systems.

The plug-in hybrid variant of the new lineup, the BMW 530e iPerformance, is scheduled to be released in Europe in March 2017. BMW introduced the "iPerformance" model designation to all BMW plug-in hybrid vehicles from July 2016. The 530e iPerformance features a 70 kW (95 hp) electric motor powered by 9.4 kWh battery. The expected all-electric range is 45 km (28 mi), under the New European Driving Cycle. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimated range is 30 km (19 mi).

Alpina

The G30 Alpina B5 made its debut at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show in saloon and Touring variants. The G30 B5 will be available exclusively with xDrive all-wheel drive. It is fitted with an Alpina-modified version of BMW's N63 that outputs 608 PS (447 kW) and 800 N·m (590 lb·ft).

The Escape

A G30 540i M Sport was used in The Escape episode released on October 23, 2016.
