The W111 Mercedes is from a time when the firm’s engineers were allowed to go about the business of designing and engineering cars without having to worry too much about the murky business of making money. The result was a high-quality work of art whose stack-headlight, neatly chromed straight lines came to define what a Mercedes was for decades to come.

Saloons were the W111’s calling card but it was the svelte coupes and convertibles that attracted celebrities and glitterati, their exquisitely wrought interiors as beautiful as they were functional. And most desirable of all was the V8-engined 280SE convertible with its 195bhp M116 motor.
