Debate about the origins of the ‘hot hatchback’ goes on among car enthusiasts, but few could argue that the VW Golf GTI has a pretty strong claim to being the car that started the movement. It was the car’s 1975 debut that made other manufacturers sit up and take notice, and to upgrade the performance of their own mainstream hatchbacks.
This was a car that married everyday practicality with sports-car performance, and VW’s modest initial expectations for sales figures were soon outstripped; the company had to increase production ten-fold, and the GTI has been the definitive ‘hot hatch’ ever since.
