Description
The 986 Boxster was released alongside the 996 Porsche 911 in 1996 and 1997 respectively. It was developed alongside the updated 911 in a joint effort to reduce development costs by using a slew of similar parts, thus making the best use of engineering time as well as manufacturing processes. Both the 911 and the Boxter uses the M96 water-cooled flat six engine, which was Porsche's first water-cooled engine. However, with the Boxster, Porsche chose to use a mid-engine configuration, providing a lower centre of gravity and a near-perfect weight distribution, which contributes to its exceptional road handling abilities.
