Have you ever wondered what gets the British people's engines revving? Well, wonder no more!

In a survey of 2,000 drivers, over half (55%) admitted to getting "intimate" in their car. The numbers were even higher for men, with 61% confessing to such encounters. Interestingly, 9% of respondents felt it was none of our business.

These findings come from a research study conducted by Auto Trader, the UK's largest digital marketplace for new and used cars. The study also revealed regional variations in car-related amorous activities. Drivers in Sunderland took the lead, with a staggering 80% admitting to engaging in intimate moments in their cars, while Cardiff ranked on the lower end of the spectrum at just 37%.

It seems that Brits are truly smitten with their vehicles. Two-thirds (64%) professed their love for their cars, and 22% even claimed to love their cars more than their partners. Surprisingly, 23% stated that they would be willing to spend more money on their cars than on their partners – certainly not great news for neglected spouses, especially with Valentine's Day around the corner.

Despite the romantic entanglements with their cars, some respondents still maintained a sense of devotion. Over a quarter (27%) revealed that they have given their cars pet names. In fact, 18% of die-hard car enthusiasts confessed that they would rather end their relationship with their partner than part with their beloved vehicle.

When asked what specifically captivated them about their cars, nearly a third (29%) cited the car's size as a factor. This lends some truth to the old saying. Furthermore, 18% stated that it was the way the car made them feel, while 19% expressed that their cars took them to places they had never been before – the interpretation of which is open to individual imagination.

Sadly, this Valentine's Day, there will be some lonely hearts out there, as over a third of Brits (35%) admitted to regretting parting ways with their old cars, confessing that they still loved and missed them dearly.

Lastly, Auto Trader's research unveiled the top ten sexiest cars as voted by the British public. In descending order, they are:
